Pulled Salmon is a term I took over from the Pulled Pork, that incredibly tender and soft pork roast which is drowned in BBQ sauce and can literally be pulled apart without any effort. This pulled meat is a perfect base for burgers, sandwiches and the like. Unfortunately I am one of those impatient brats who cannot wait a gazillion infinities in front of a barbecue to be finally able to eat.
Particularly since I don’t even own a barbecue (which would result in an even longer waiting time). And as I don’t want to bother my old but gold stove with night shifts I’m going with the quicker alternative.
Let’s settle for something equally (or even more?) delicious. Salmon. I usually prepare salmon in a pan. It’s quick and sufficient. And if you don’t fry it to a bone-dry piece of dust it’ll taste great. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
But – and here’s the twist – if you’ve got some more time available I suggest you try to roast salmon in the oven for a change. The salmon get’s wrapped in baking paper and roasts slowly at a low temperature. The fish will become super tender and juicy.
Oh btw, as I’m an impatient and lazy tad (you read it in the second paragraph ^^) I went with store bought bagles. If you’re up to making them from scratch go ahead – homemade is always beter 😉
Of course this pulled salmon bagel recipe is – you might have guessed it – versatile and easy to modify. It’s a basic pulled salmon recipe to inspire you further. Instead of Bagels you might want to use a whole grain bread or some fluffy brioche buns instead. Some fruity tomatoes, roasted onions for the crunch and fresh rocket could also be your game changer.
So give it a go and enjoy experimenting.
- 250g salmon fillet
- ½ bunch of chives
- 3-4 bagels, for example after this recipe or store bought
- 1 red onion
- 2 tbsp of a smokey BBQ sauce of choice
- 1-2 tbsp sesame oil
- roasted onions
- slices of tomato
- Peel and chop the red onion and stir it in a bowl with BBQ sauce, sesame oil and a dash of water.
- Marinade the salmon filet in it for a couple of hours. You can very well leave it in the marinade over night. If you're short on time you can try roasting it without waiting time. As the salmon will roast slowly in the oven that might suffice.
- Cut a piece of baking paper into shape (you want to wrap the salmon in it completely) and place the marinated salmon on it. Set the remaining marinade aside, we'll need it later. Wrap the salmon in the baking paper like a bonbon and tie it up on both sides.
- Roast the salmon at 80°C (176°F) for about 40 – 45 minutes. 15 minutes before the end you can add the bagels to the griddle.
- Take the salmon out of the oven and add it to a bowl. With a fork pull it apart and mix it with the remaining marinade.
- Halve and slice the avocado. Mince the chives. Halve the bagel and spread the pulled salmon evenly. Add the avocado slices on top and drizzle some chives over it. Optionally you can spread the upper half of the bagel with more BBQ sauce.
- Best served when still warm.
